Characteristics of in vitro Germination by different Pollen Nucleate Types of Horticultural Plants with Special Reference to Ornamental Species

Abstract

133 horticultural (particularly ornamental) species, comprising 49 families and 121 genera, were subjected to study the following characteristics of pollen germination responses;
Binucleate pollen germinated well in in vitro medium culture of 100% moisture with the cultural solution, and no germination was noted in 98%-moisture conditions without the solution medium. Trinucleate pollen, on the contrary, germinated fairly well in 98%-moisture conditions in which the binucleate did not germinate at all, and no germination occurred in the 100%-solution medium in which the binucleate usually germinated well. The both nucleate did not germinate in 100%-moisture conditions without the cultural medium.
The response of trinucleate pollen to 98% moisture in the pollen germination is due much likely to the higher respiration (oxygen requirement) in the process than the binucleate.
